Chameleon Tattoo | Boston Tattoo Convention | Day 1
Capturing Ink and Identity: Chameleon Tattoo at the Boston Tattoo Convention
By Kristen Beres, Photojournalistic Photographer | Rhode Island
2023’s Boston Tattoo Convention brought together some of the most talented artists in the industry, and among them stood one of the region’s most iconic studios, Chameleon Tattoo. Established in 2000, Chameleon Tattoo holds the distinction of being the first fully licensed tattoo shop in Somerville, Massachusetts, located at 33 Union Square. With a legacy of creativity and craftsmanship, the shop’s presence at the convention was both historic and vibrant.
As a documentary-style photographer, I had the privilege of capturing Chameleon Tattoo in action, focusing on authentic, unscripted moments that unfolded throughout the event. From the hum of machines to the intensity of an artist’s focus, every frame told a story of dedication, expression, and artistry. My lens followed the Chameleon team as they showcased not just their technical skill, but their deep connection to the tattooing community and the individuals they inked. These weren’t just tattoos, they were moments of transformation, captured in real time.
Photographing Chameleon Tattoo at the Boston Tattoo Convention wasn’t just about documenting an event, it was about preserving a piece of local culture. Through light, texture, and honest portraiture, my aim was to highlight the human side of tattooing: the stories, the process, and the passion behind the needle.
