Capturing the Spirit of South County Pride: Rhode to Broadway at The Contemporary Theater Company
By Kristen Beres, Photojournalistic Theater Photographer
Despite the rain, the energy at South County Pride was anything but gray, especially during the inspiring Rhode to Broadway showcase at The Contemporary Theater Company in Wakefield, RI. I had the joy of photographing these talented young performers as they lit up the stage with heart, resilience, and an unmistakable love for theater. Not even a rainy forecast could dim their light.
What makes photographing Rhode to Broadway such a privilege is their mission: to make high-quality theater training accessible and inspiring for young artists. And it shows. These kids arrived with purpose and passion, and every moment, whether on stage or in quiet corners backstage, was filled with authenticity.
As a documentary-style photographer, I focus on these in-between moments: a deep breath before a big entrance, the silent joy of a performance well done, or the unspoken camaraderie of castmates waiting in the wings.
South County Pride offered more than just a backdrop; it was a living, breathing celebration of community, inclusion, and creativity. The vibrant energy of the crowd, the welcoming atmosphere, and the open support for self-expression made it the perfect setting for a performance that was both meaningful and memorable.
Rhode to Broadway’s showcase wasn’t just a performance, it was a glimpse into the dreams of emerging artists. It reminded me that the most powerful stories aren’t always told on the biggest stages. Sometimes, they unfold right in front of us, framed by a summer storm and a community cheering them on.
